A MAN has been taken to hospital with burns to his arm suffered as he escaped a fire in his house early today.

The fire broke out in the single-storey timber residence in Hunter Street in inner suburban Richmond shortly after midnight (AEDT).

A Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) spokesman said the fire caused about $80,000 worth of damage to the house.

While the fire was contained to a bedroom, other parts of the house sustained heat, smoke and water damage, the spokesman said.

A smoke alarm was fitted to the house but was not working.

Fire crews controlled the blaze in nine minutes.

MFB fire investigators planned to examine the scene after daybreak to determine the cause.
