Fire in South Korea kills 40

A warehouse fire in the South Korean town of Icheon has killed 40 people.

Another 10 people were injured in the blaze, seven of them seriously.

Officials say the fire apparently started in the basement of the building during construction work.

Local media reports say a number of the victims were ethnic Koreans from China.

Hundreds of firefighters worked through the night to battle the blaze, which emitted thick toxic smoke.

Fire authorities also evacuated hundreds of residents from the nearby town.

The exact cause of the Icheon fire, about 80 kilometres south of Seoul, is not yet known.
